My Project
When Stars are Scattered is a book that will stay with you long after you have read it. It is based on Omar Mohamed's real-life experience growing up as a Somalian refugee just trying to make it in a refugee camp. This book was selected as one of our Battle of the Books selections for next school year and I also want enough copies so that we can have a class set of the book so several classes can check it out of the library to enjoy. It is written in a graphic novel format, so it is perfect for our English Language Learners, special needs students, and just anyone who loves to read graphic novels.
Many of my students have no idea what life is like outside of their community and I love it when my students are able to read books that give them a glimpse into what is like in other parts of the world.
The book gives you a look into the day-to-day life and struggles when growing up in a refugee camp, caring for a special needs sibling, and being able to create a sense of family and community even in some of the hardest circumstances.
