My students need “just right” books in order to grow as readers. They need high quality literature at their individual reading levels to attain instant success as readers and to encourage growth and goal setting!
Readers read. The best way to support a student in reading is to encourage eyes on print: morning, noon, and night. Books in hand, strategies employed, off you go to the wonderful world of reading. A skill, an activity, a hobby for life—or it could be at least. It takes books. “Just right” books in a variety of genres to engage many interests.
My first graders are developing readers excited for the adventures reading can provide.
Their book boxes, their minds, and imaginations are geared up and anxiously await your help! Our shelves are empty because we are a new section of grade one and I am new to the school.
My Project
We need "just right" books. Just right books provide a stair step approach to reading. Students can read simple text successfully in a nicely presented REAL book. The next level is a little harder, and a bit harder after that...
Walking into our classroom, you would immediately notice our empty shelves awaiting leveled books.
We have picture books for read alouds but we lack books at "just right" levels. As an experienced teacher, I have seen students make so much progress when they can practice with books that they can read by themselves. Of course, we need many levels because every student is different and they jump levels as time passes.
