Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach high school seniors in a Dual Credit Composition class where students receive college credit in English 101 if they meet the standards set for the course. Above all, 12th graders in this class on Chicago's northwest side write original arguments using evidence and warrants as support. These arguments are much more successful when they are fueled by genuinely interesting topics and sophisticated yet provocative texts.
My students are urban, smart, and curious; they deserve to be exposed to texts which complement their experiences but also encourage them to think more critically.
Texts which relate to my students' daily lives but also push them to ask deep questions are essential. Students should see themselves in the texts they read and be exposed to stories which resonate with their own. This is Modern Art is culturally relevant reading. This Donors Choose project, if funded, will provide a class set of this play that my senior students can read and use for years to come.
My Project
A crew of graffiti artists bombed the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute in Chicago on a snowy night in February of 2010. Their art remained visible for only a few hours, but their action speaks to a bigger question of how marginalized people can gain access to an art world that often seems designed for only the rich, traditionally trained, or well-connected. What is a creative individual who is none of those things supposed to do with their message? their art? their ideas?
This is Modern Art brings challenges the idea that an elite sector of society should be able to decide for the rest of us what constitutes "art." It is a play that explores questions of culture, art, insider status, and permanence.
Its relevance and authenticity will be embraced by my students, and I believe it will encourage them to start (or continue) asking valuable questions about who gets to decide what matters.
