Our school’s occupational therapist, and Ms. O, the school’s speech and language pathologist, work together to support students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn everyday skills that will support their transition to adulthood. We work with students with a range of disabilities affecting their cognitive, social, physical, and emotional skills. Our students are very eager to learn and to be as independent as possible. We currently run two groups: Job Club & Cooking Club.
Job Club focuses on pre-vocational skills, working both independently and collaboratively with peers, following a work schedule, initiating/completing tasks on their own, problem solving, self-determination, and self-advocacy.
Cooking Club focuses on all aspects of cooking including: following a visual recipe, gathering ingredients & tools, setting the table, hand hygiene, kitchen safety, safe use of appliances, washing dishes, sweeping, loading/unloading dishwasher, etc. Our school’s functional skills suite also offers opportunities for students to practice other household skills such as: laundry, making the bed, folding/hanging clothes, “Coffee Cart”, time management, and more. The learning opportunities are endless!
However, we have limited funds to purchase the adaptive equipment, materials, and groceries needed for all of these activities. Through this project, we are hoping to expand the student’s learning opportunities and prepare them for life after high school. Our goal is to set high expectations for the students and watch them soar. In our cart, we are requesting Round Tablecloth, MyPlate Food & Nutrition Visual Learning Guides, Food Date Labels and basic paper goods, cleaning supplies, organization supplies.
