Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our classroom, we have a rewards system. Throughout the week, students receive class money for displaying good classroom behavior, and at the end of the week, they can cash in their class currency for a reward. As a teacher, this system works very well for behavior management, however, the cost for these rewards can add up very quickly, especially when it comes out of my own pocket! But just because these rewards can get expensive, doesn't mean our students don't deserve them. This year, I asked my class what sorts of rewards would incentivize good behavior and these are some of the things they came up with: Hot Wheels, stress balls, flavored lipbalm, keychains, plastic jewelry, prank toys, putty, slime, croc charms, water balloons, sticky hands, water beads, finger puppets, hair accessories, and slinkies.
Esentially, of the materials in this project will be used as rewards for the proper in-class behavior (listed below).
These behaviors are taken directly from the California standards for socio-emotional learning:
3.A.2. Identifying opinion versus fact about people and groups of people
3.B.2. Naming ways people’s identities and experiences may lead to different emotional reactions.
3.C.2. Recognizing healthy and safe boundaries in interactions with others.
3.D.2. Identifying appropriate, trusted people to seek support from based on their specific needs and recognizing ways they can support others.
3.E.2. Demonstrating acceptance and inclusion of those who are different from themselves and valuing the contributions of the members of a diverse group.
3.F.2. Working cooperatively in a diverse group of peers. Attempting to understand how bias, prejudice, stereotypes, and racism can play a role in how people act and make decisions.
3.G.2. Exploring the importance and power of community participation and service.
