As the school librarian, I have the responsibility, and the great pleasure, to interact with each and every one of our students for a variety of purposes. From Kindergarten to 5th grade, the best part of my day is watching them actively practice our school character traits to create an atmosphere of learning.
Focused on CREST: Craftsmanship, Respect, Empathy, Self-Discipline and Trustworthiness, our students understand that they are responsible for their learning.
You may see students sitting quietly while others are speaking. You may observe students engaged in a discussion by noticing that they are motioning with me/you (thumb and forefinger forward and back) gesture to indicate that they relate to what the speaker is saying. You may also see students sitting in groups collaborating and grappling over a problem, or analyzing data that was gathered to solve a problem.
Our school has the highest poverty rate in the district with 99% of our students receiving a free or reduced-price lunch. Poverty is difficult to navigate and requires a strong culture to beat it. Our kids eat, breathe and sleep CREST.
My Project
Jitters are always part of the first day of school, and morning meeting is just the place to put our kiddos at ease.
Using the parachute, students will be participating in cooperative group activities to get to know each other in a fun and easy way.
A discussion will follow by pointing out how collaboration is essential and can be fun when we spend our days as part of a group.
No matter the age group, there's something about a parachute that excites them and puts them at ease. Whether you just shake it, flip balls or bean bags or even silly plastic chickens out of it, it's sure to bring a smile. Oh. And then there's the raise it up high and duck and tuck inside for a "we are one" team activity. The additional items will also be used for "getting to know you" activities.
