My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast & lunch. Our students rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition. The school services many homeless students. These students live in transient shelters. The homeless students have poor nutrition, resulting in poor health and are frequently absent. We have several special needs students in our class receiving special services.
There are 54 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.
We have 8 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino and Arabic. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud and do not have educational toys at home. The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially & emotionally.
My Project
My students need doctor's kits which will be added to our dramatic play area where the students have the "Parkside Pediatric Clinic". We are missing some medical equipment play in the center. The children will role play doctor and patient. This center will enhance developing future careers and building self esteem of the students in this low income neighborhood.
Role play is an important part of child development, as it builds confidence, creativity communication, physical development and problem solving, as well as developing future careers.
Along with being a fun activity, it also allows children to get into character and act out real life roles or fictional performances.
The wooden puzzles are related to our unit on Animal Babies. These wooden puzzles have amazing photos of animals, which will increase vocabulary and communication while helping with hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Wooden puzzles help with shape recognition, memory, language skills, fine motor skills and problem-solving. When children flip, turn and place pieces of the puzzle, they are learning the connection between their hands and their eyes.
