What's The Value Of Math?

My students need place value tools to assist them in understanding what calculations are happening when they add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is pretty easy for many of us to solve an addition problem, keep track of our spending, and multiply to find out what our paycheck will be. The challenge is to help our kids get there. They can move a digit here, carry a number there,BUT what does that mean and what is the VALUE in numbers?

My students are energetic, curious to learn, and often ask "WHY"!

These fourth graders have varying skill levels ranging from kindergarten to high school in both reading and math. They work together well and challenge each other to solve problems. These students offer unique and valuable skills and have diverse backgrounds that offer varied insights for our learning team. They attend an K-6 urban elementary school where approximately 75% of students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch.

My Project

Imagine, students shifting place value disks around to illustrate the numbers they are writing in their algorithm. They are disagreeing about which digit to carry and one of them reaches for the place value cards and illustrates the base-ten system to help the other student SEE which number to carry. Two other students are making equal groups of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones using place value disks to explore multiplication. They understand WHY and HOW multiplication of 2-digit by 1-digit numbers works before they have even seen the algorithm. They are able to visualize and solve problems mentally because they have an understanding of how changing digits between places changes the value of a number. I am requesting place value cards and place value disks to illustrate the value of the digits they are writing in the algorithm and when to regroup based on the base-ten system. Also, the place value games are fun, interactive ways to reinforce the value of numbers.

One of the hardest concepts for elementary students to understand is place value.

So often students work to find the final answer and don't understand what is really happening. These tools will help students to KNOW what is happening and build the foundation for all future math they will encounter. Thank you for your support of this vision!
