My Students

Kindergarten is such an exciting time of learning, developing and growing for children! My students are so many things. They are explorers, creators, and scientists. They are highly inquisitive and want to know about the world around them! Each student has unique interests and backgrounds. This uniqueness is what makes young learners so special. Each child brings something different to the table, which builds the community in our classroom and unites us with a special bond. Our school is located in a small, rural town. The limited amount of resources in our area does not, however, limit the imaginations of these children. They are fun, energetic, inquisitive and full of life. They love to learn and ask questions! They want to know about things... all things! It is my joy to support and facilitate this discovery.

My Project

Learning to retell a familiar story is an important skill in the Kindergarten classroom. From recalling characters, setting, problem and solution to being able to tell events in order, retelling is key to comprehension. This skill set is something that is not always easy. In fact, it can seem very abstract to a young learner who is just beginning to interact with texts. The items in this project will help my students to begin learning the skills it takes to be able to successfully retell a story from beginning to end. Not only will we add an assortment of books to our classroom library, but we will also add hands on props and manipulatives that can be used to help students recall key details in the text. The students can use the retelling props to sequence the events in each story as well as recall the main story elements. I can only imagine the benefits that this center will add to our classroom! From text comprehension and oral language development, the possibilities are endless!
