My Project

A core part of AP Environmental Science is field science and lab work. CollegeBoard recommends that 25% of the course time be spent performing labs and analyzing data. This past year, CollegeBoard released 19 recommended labs for teachers to do in their classes. The first lab is designed to help students understand net primary productivity.

Net primary productivity is the amount of biomass (carbon) produced by primary producers per unit area and time.

Through this lab, students will measure the amount of dissolved oxygen in samples containing aquatic plants. This lab is designed to teach students how to determine the net primary productivity of an aquatic plant by measuring its gross primary productivity and rate of cellular respiration. During this lab, students will learn to measure the gross primary productivity and respiration rate of an aquatic plant in a lab setting. By the end of the lab, students will be able to calculate the net primary productivity of a plant from data they collect by subtracting its respiration rate from its gross primary productivity.

The Dissolved Oxygen (DO) probes will enable my students to accurately measure the DO levels of the samples. They will also be exposed to real environmental science sampling tools and learn how to properly measure DO, as well as how to handle and care for the probes. These are skills I did not learn until I was an undergraduate, and it will be wonderful for my students to gain these skills as high school students.
