I am a science teacher and coach for my middle school's academic team. Throughout the year, our academic team members have decreased drastically. What is the problem? The problem is lack of morale and competitive drive due to the poor preparation for academic competitions. Yes, I know that preparation falls mostly on the hands of the coaches. How can we prepare without the proper practice materials? At this point, we have a number of sample questions to use during practice. This is only one part of the total package that is required for effective preparation. We are in need of a set of buzzers. This will help students be able to practice "real" competition situations. Having a set of buzzers will also add some excitement to practice. I feel that the team members are bored with practice, and that boredom is reflected in their performance (Well, those who are still on the team). We need that competitive drive back so our membership will increase, and put our school in running for a win.
