This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 1st grade at a fantastic urban school in a working class community. Nearly 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and most are English language learners. Nearly all of my students are native Spanish speakers. They are a great group of kids that are always eager to learn new things and share them with everyone they know.
One of my goals every year is to help my students become readers. For some, this is an easy task. For others, it is an overwhelming challenge. One of the key factors in becoming a great reader is knowing your sight words. I have found that the students who struggle the most are the ones who haven't memorized these common words.
My students need fun and engaging activities that will help them master sight words. They are tired of practicing boring flashcards every day. The four sight word puzzles and games that I am requesting will solve this problem. My students can use them independently and with their peers. I can also use the sorting activities during small group instruction.
The materials I am requesting will be a tremendous help for my students. Your generosity will ensure that my struggling students will have every opportunity and resource available to them. Thank you for helping my students become better readers.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
