Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from varied income levels, cultural backgrounds and equally mixed genders. All are amazingly open-minded! Several comment that they'd like to learn the language of their peers. Their reading levels are just as varied - from mid-second grade level down to just barely making it to first grade. Since we are a school that highly values reading, it's going to be a busy year diversifying!
My students are curious inquirers, reflected in their constant questioning: upon hearing foreign sounds in the trees on our way to the cafeteria, seeing a new bug in the bathroom, and every single new word they hear in Read Aloud time!
For example, yesterday we stopped on our way to P.E. to hear a quacking noise coming from the awning in the breezeway. We couldn't see the animal so I said I'd search on YouTube but one of the students said "Ask Alexa." They know how to get the information they seek already and have emptied my non-fiction bins on their levels as they have gathered books for their book bags the first week of school. It's going to be an amazing year!
My Project
By donating to our project, you will not only help to develop and increase student inquiry (allowing them to research their questions in a more user-friendly way); but you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement as well (as there will be more computers to do their math and reading practice on). Chromebooks will increase our classroom tools for research (we research animals of choice as well as cultural differences among countries) and skills practice by extending the technology in our classroom (at present we have 3 working towers and monitors with keyboards) and provide ways to research in teams. Our students will have more flexibility to not only go to a computer "station," but to take that "station" to their collaborating team tables and work on projects together.
