Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a self-contained kindergarten class of 7 students with Developmental Delays and/or Autism at a Title I school. Their needs are in multiple areas: pre-academics, social, behavior, communication, sensory, fine and gross motor. We celebrate all skills students learn as it may take them longer to gain a skill than other students. They need and require different methods and modes of teaching as well as reinforcement, more than your typical child needs.
My Kindergarten students are in a self-contained classroom due to their unique special needs in a Title I school.
My Project
Help give my students a fun, interactive, hands on way to learn the sounds of letters. My students are in a self-contained Kindergarten special education classroom.
My students learn and grasp concepts when they have a visual or manipulative presented to them.
Pairing a visual or manipulative with a letter sound will help to build my students’ phonemic awareness (their ability to hear sounds). Phonics Magnetic Word biolding Boards and Match-A-Sound! are items I've included in my project have manipulatives with the item. We will use these to discriminate sounds in a fun way! This makes learning letters and letter sounds more meaningful and keeps them more engaged in learning. Not only will my students be learning letter sounds, but this will also be helpful for those student that still need to learn their letters of the alphabet.
These activities would provide literacy rich classroom to help develop my students into strong readers. Phonemic awareness is a reading foundational skill that is essential in creating strong readers and writers and I want to provide as much opportunities for my students to learn them as best as they can!
