What's That Beautiful Sound? Alto Recorders!

Help me give my students the opportunity to play alto recorders! These larger recorders have a resonant and much lower sound (in comparison with the soprano recorder) that is appealing to upper elementary and middle school students.

My Project

I'm requesting alto recorders for my upper elementary and middle school students to give them a new challenge with wind instruments! I recently played my own alto recorder for the older students, and they were so excited about the low sound that they begged me to get alto recorders for music class so they can learn to play them as well!

My students love playing the soprano recorder, and they're ready for the new challenge of playing the alto recorder in the key of F.

This will allow them to play lower melodies from around the world, as the alto recorder can approximate the sound of world flutes like the Japanese shakuhachi.

I have several goals for my students with the alto recorder project. My first goal is for students to transfer their recorder technique to larger alto recorder. This requires a substantial amount of adjustment in playing technique, as the holes are farther apart, and the fingerings they're used to for soprano recorder (key of C) are now different letter names for the alto recorder (key of F). Secondly, my goal is for my students to learn to play duets with soprano recorders, as the alto recorder is the perfect instrument on which to learn to play harmony parts. Finally, I want to give my most motivated recorder players an additional challenge of reading alto recorder parts.
