My Students

I teach mathematics at a small inner-city high school and I instruct students of all varying levels of need and learning styles in Geometry, Algebra 2 and Pre-calculus. Our school has many opportunities for tutoring students in large and small groups, to better prepare them for college level math.

Many of my students really benefit from the tutoring available to them to reinforce the day's lesson or to spiral back to old concepts.

My students find me at all hours of the school day and after school to get assistance for math topics they would like to understand better or receive more practice on. However, they are using resources for the old math curriculum because my school does not have updated review books. The Geometry and Algebra 2 courses I teach culminate in an end-of-the-year state exam. I teach mostly juniors and seniors in these classes and my students know that their achievement on these exams appears on their final report card transcripts. Although many aspects of learning cannot be measured by standardized exams, success on these tests are important for them to build their academic resumes and get into the colleges they would like to attend.

My Project

My students all have different styles of learning; sometimes they like to work individually, other times the dynamics of working in a group allows them to share ideas and make mathematical connections together. They each struggle with different concepts and I have often found myself directing students to online resources or review books to give them extra practice work to strengthen specific topics. I have given practice problems after school from "Math B" review books, which is the outdated math curriculum that has been replaced with Geometry and Algebra 2/Trigonometry. Though many of the questions in these books are still relevant and helpful, there are topics missing from these review books that my students want help on. If funded, I intend to use the Geometry and Algebra 2 review books to help my students prepare for their state exams. My students will be able to work from these books during class and during tutoring when we review for Regents exams.

Project donations will help empower my students mathematically as it will not only directly help to improve their math skills, but also their study habits.

I remember when I was in high school, nothing helped prepare better for state exams than these review books. They are easy to use and have answers to questions explained and helped me learn how to study. I want this skill to be passed onto my college-bound junior and senior students who will need strong work habits at the university level.
