Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading and writing go hand in hand. This is exemplified in journal writing. With the donation of the journal materials, my students will be able to connect their writing with their readings especially in the books they create.
Our school is the neighborhood school located in the inner-city.
My first grade students have many obstacles to overcome before even reaching the classroom. Yet, they are motivated and willing to learn. They are excited when they move up a level in reading. They are creative and love to express themselves through writing and drawing. Our classroom motto is "do your best each day! Each day is new day!"
Unfortunately, many students come to school lacking school supplies. I know the donation of journal books and materials will be greatly appreciated by my students. For each student to have their own journal will be wonderful.
My Project
The donation of the journal books will assist my students in writing as well as reading. It is through this activity that the children learn the mechanics of writing, such as words make sentences, sentences make sense, and that sentences begin with capital letters and end with punctuation. Journal writing also allows me, the teacher, to quickly assess the skills that each student has in order to plan mini-lessons that will target the needs and reinforce the skills.
The donation of the journal materials will greatly impact the learning of the students in my class.
Research indicates that reading and writing are intertwined. I have used journal writing in the past and was amazed at how much the students took ownership of their writing and how the writing significantly increased their reading development. Lastly, it is so encouraging for a student to look through their journal and see the improvement in their writing over the course of the year.
