Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My little ones come from diverse backgrounds, but most of them live in shelters or with relatives, crowded in little apartments with more than two families. They usually live with only one parent and sometimes that parent has more than one job. They come to me eager to learn and hungry, not only for physical food but also for love and safety.
I teach Math, Reading, Writing and Science all in Spanish; my students are becoming bilingual.
This year my students are very smart and they are already reading a lot and writing. They like exploring and discovering. They love science! We planted our little vegetable garden in our classroom and would like to observe chickens hatch! We talked about the life cycle of a butterfly and they were so into it! My students are brilliant and eager to learn.
My Project
Studying the life cycle of any animal is always exciting for first graders. But actually seeing a creature develop and be born is exhilarating, especially for my students, who would hardly have the chance to visit museums or farms due to their living situations.
Having an incubator and a lamp in the class and seeing the eggs develop daily and change will be an experience that these kiddos will not forget!
The best part is when the little chicks start to break open the shells! Just seeing how they struggle to come out will give me opportunities to talk about persistence, hard work and patience. I want my students to experience nature hands on and become responsible by taking care of these creatures. This project will also give them more vocabulary in Spanish, since I teach Science in Spanish.
