What's in a Word?

Help me give my students to build on their vocabulary skills by reading a variety of diverse books and practice vocabulary skills on the Flocabulary platform.

My Students

We are a Title I school with over 86% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. 82% of our students are African American, 17% are Hispanic, and 1% are of other ethnicities. These students make up the demographics of our school. Many of our students are transfers from low academically performing schools. When they come to us, they are one to two grade levels behind if not more.

We are a performing arts school; as well as a partial neighborhood school that houses many children from low-income neighborhoods.

Our school is located in a neighborhood that is very crime stricken. We work hard to provide our students with a different environment than what they normally encounter.

My Project

As my students increase their interest in reading, vocabulary becomes a focus to assist with comprehension. Using a variety of diverse books brings on a different experience for most students. Exposing students to unfamiliar cultures expands their vocabulary knowledge.

Reading fluency and vocabulary knowledge allows for greater comprehension skills.

These products will help with listening and reading skills. Books will be read aloud and then used to focus on major literary skills like content clues and inferences. The program Flocabulary will help with understanding the vocabulary terms and learning how to determine the meanings of those words.
