My Students

Social Studies does not have to be old and boring.

I work with students with special needs at the high school level.

Most are preparing for college and need the right materials to help them get there. I am a new teacher at this school and want to put something current into the hands of my new students each week. Current Events magazine fits the bill. The wide variety of topics covered by the magazine will help me instill an interest in what is going on in the world. If students are interested then they are more likely to be be successful in their learning.

My Project

The focus of my Social Studies classes is reading comprehension and writing. With Current Events magazine students will be able to read and summarize articles, conduct further research on topics of interest, participate in class discussions and debates. For example, an article on the upcoming national election would allow students to express their analysis of the pros and cons and put those ideas on paper.

The ability to put something new and personal into the hands of these students with special needs will help them be successful in so many ways.

Please help share Current Events and make Social Studies relevant for these kids.
