My Students

I have hard-working and determined group of sixth grade students this year! We are a self-contained classroom, and the students enjoy the relationships that they are able to build with their peers, as well as with me. We place very high standards on working as a team and treating each other as family.

I teach 23 students in a small school district, with a poverty rate higher than 60%.

This does not hold my students back. They are eager to learn and are very engaged in the classroom setting.

My Project

The use of non-fiction text in my classroom has been increasing throughout the past couple of years. I have found that the reading of non-fiction texts helps to increase the growth of reading levels. TIME for Kids will be a great resource that the students will enjoy.

While I hope to increase the growth of reading in my classroom, the students will also be informed of current events around the world.

I took a poll in my classroom, and less than a fourth of my students said that they watch the news or listen to it on the radio. This will provide my students current information in an age appropriate language.

The TIME for Kids subscription includes weekly magazines with reliable and current news. The magazines provide articles written at different lexile levels. With it, will also be teaching materials that correlate with the Common Core Standards.
