This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My high schoolers are an extra special group. Their ability levels and goals differ but in the end they all love to learn. Some of my students are working on writing grocery lists, completing job applications and washing/drying clothes. While other students are working on using a picture grocery list, recognition of personal information and sorting clothes for washing. Nonetheless our favorite activity in our class is learning how to cook.
In this classroom, we are working to learn life and community skills that will help them after graduating from high school.
Although our academic classes are self-contained, we participate in electives and other school activities such as pep rallies, fashion shows, and talent shows. Though my job is to teach academics my goal is to ensure each of my students is able to participate within their natural environment as independently as possible. It is my duty to help them build skills that will assist them for life.
My Project
We need your assistance in helping us stock our cooking closet with cookware and utensils. These materials will allow me to teach my students how to cook simple meals for themselves and their family.
By donating to our project you will help my students gain skills that they need for life.
They will get to select meals they would like to prepare based on their preferences. The students will also assist in finding recipes, creating budgets for needed food items, developing the grocery lists and purchasing food needed.
Students will work on daily living, functional and employment skills. They will also be learning across the curriculum with literacy, math and science during our cooking lessons.
