This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Mastering sight words in kindergarten to second grade is essential to a child's future in reading. During the day we read, write, and spell sight words, but often this isn't enough for some students! The lag in progress for some is what prompted me to do something... a Listen and Learn sight word DVD!

My classroom is in an urban setting where many of my students come from homes where both parents work hard to support them, English is often not the first language, and lack of time is always a factor.

Many are eager to learn but need additional support, which is not available to them. I've met with families who have mentioned that they want to help their children learn to read the sight words, but they do not know how to say them in English. Or they are home cooking dinner and doing flashcards do not fit in their schedule daily.

My Project

I created Power Points of sight words, letter identification, letter sounds, and number identification with me reading the words/ pronouncing the sounds. I played these Power Points to them everyday. My class began to flourish with the number of words known, but it still wasn't enough. I discussed my efforts with many parents and they asked if they could have a copy of my Power Point, I agreed until I realized the possible concern. Many parents did not have Power Point installed on their computer, but many indicated that they had a DVD player. After searching, I located a program which would allow me to turn my Power Points into a DVD, but my computer does not have the burner to create the DVD.

It is my dream to eventually send a DVD home with every kindergarten and first grade student in my school at the start of each year.

It is my goal to see if together we can increase their sight word knowledge. This could eliminate the amount of classroom time I would need to dedicate to sight words, and focus on other skills to help them become successful readers and writers.
