The school I currently work at is 93% economically disadvantaged and 73% at-risk.
This means most of the school population is poor and has a high chance of not completing school in the future. The majority of our students are raised by a single parent or grandparents. There are some students that even help raise their siblings because their parents have to work at night.
Many of our students suffer from social and emotional problems which requires help from the school counselor. These students include students who were directly and indirectly impacted by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. I would like to create an inviting , safe, calming, and technology friendly environment for students who visits my office.
My Project
As school counselor, at times I have to find new and innovative ways to reach students when conducting individual/group counseling sessions and classroom guidance lessons.
HP Chromebooks would be an exciting way to get students more involved in their social and emotional learning.
The students would be able to have access to a multitude of counseling apps during their individual and group counseling sessions. They can use these apps for virtual play therapy, building emotional and self awareness, problem solving and breathing strategies. Another benefit would be being able to service my bilingual students more effectively because they will have access to apps available in their native language.
As for my classroom guidance lessons, I can use the HP Chromebooks for introducing my lesson with read alouds and videos. Also, I could utilize them by having fifth grade students to complete interest and career inventories for their end of the year career portfolios.
These requested HP Chromebooks will be beneficial to all students served, especially those students still affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. With the resources from this project, I hope all students visiting my office throughout the school year will feel it is their special place to feel safe. Therefore, they will be more comfortable with sharing their thoughts and feelings.
