My students need snacks and supplies to become interested in joining a book club. The easel pads and sign holders will allow me to display the sets of books that I currently have available in the library media center and advertise this.
Our students come from many cultures and speak various languages but all share the need to learn English as a new language. Students are also from diverse socioeconomic statuses. Some students come from families that live in a single family home while other students reside in public housing.
This beach side community also suffered great damage when hurricane Sandy flooded the area and destroyed many homes.
Some of these homes were rebuilt while others were sold forcing families to leave the community. Our school was flooded and we relocated to a neighboring high school for two months. We serve the population of students that remained in this geographical area.
In addition to educating our general education students, English as a new language students, we have a large special education population. Our school is a Title I school entitling students to receive free lunch.
My Project
Students will join a book club to engage in reading a book with other cross grade students during lunch time in the Library twice a month. Enjoying a healthy snack while discussing a book is what adults do in book clubs. Students will be able to dialogue about their ideas, interests and excitement for the books selected while increasing the amount of time they spend on independent reading.
Our middle school students need the opportunity to have independent reading book choice and the opportunity to discuss books with their peers.
With my support and the guidance of other teachers who join a book club students will have the opportunity to enhance their reading skills while developing their social skills.
Having some of the basic school supplies will help students in expressing their understanding of the books. Students will also be able to use their creative expression to advertise the books to other members of our school community. My expectation is that students will be reading, writing, listening and speaking about these well chosen books for the middle school audience. I have personally met two of the featured authors during professional library conferences that I have attended. During professional library conferences that I have attended. I hope to share this experience with my students and get them hooked on an author!
