This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember going to music class and singing along with the piano? My students do not have that opportunity. Our piano's keys stick and it is so out of tune that it doesn't hold a tune anymore. We need a keyboard that stays in tune and can move with us to the gym for performances.
My students are from a low-economic area.
I teach music to over 600 students from 1st grade to 5th grade. I also have an after school choir and help with the school play every year. Last year, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choir had 80 students! We have at least 2 performances as well as the yearly musical in our gym every year. Many of these activities are the first time my students get to experience performing on stage. Many do not have the opportunity to have a piano in their homes. I have many budding musicians who are so excited to be a part of my musical groups.
My Project
Right now we have no working piano. The constant change in temperature in my room has caused the current regular piano to be so out of tune that it isn't tunable anymore without massive repairs. The keys stick down when you press on them making it unplayable. All of my teaching, rehearsals, and performances are done with compact discs or mp3s. With this keyboard I could have more effective rehearsals because I could teach the notes for individual parts rather than just playing through the track and singing the notes to them. Also, the students would be having a more authentic musical experience through listening to live music. I also would be able to transport the piano to the gym for performances which I wouldn't be able to do even if my current piano was in working condition. This piano is also smaller than a regular piano and can be moved out of the way when I need more classroom space for movement, dances, and for my larger classes that just need more space.
Your donations will give my students the opportunity to experience live music and will improve their music learning in a poor community where they otherwise would not have these opportunities.
