My students need magazines. These students do not have access to information without the internet. We need them to read a magazine and learn about current events.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the librarian in a school where the teachers have to order books and they rarely arrive. It is in a urban setting and my typical day is teaching children to use books that are antiquated. I see 450 children on a weekly basis and I would like to introduce them to current children's magazines.
These students do not have access to ordering or purchasing magazines.
Imagine not being able to go to the corner store to purchase your beloved Time or Newsweek. I would like these students to be able to pick up a copy of Ranger Rick if they liked science and read current interesting articles. Boy's Life Magazine has articles that appeal to young boys that might not have access to the Internet in their homes. Many of these children do not have computers at home and this would be a wonderful resource for them at school. Highlights Magazine has always been a favorite of mine because it teaches right and wrong and many other simple concepts that can be reinforced at school in the classroom. My biggest challenge in ordering these subscriptions is the school does not have any resources for us to purchase new books or materials.
My Project
I will be able to present these age appropriate materials to certain grades and they will find articles that appeal to them. At first, I will introduce the magazine and then we will read certain articles together. At the end of every month, I will let them read the articles that they like and then share with other students by writing reports or completing presentations. I will have some of the older students help the younger ones find articles they like and read to them portions of it. The teachers can then use these resources on their Elmos to highlight some of the current events in these magazines.
These resources will improve the library to keep it current.
At this time, these children are reading books and periodicals that are outdated. The students do not have access to newspapers or magazines in our library. The students will have access to authority resources to support student inquiries. They will have access to current events before they are published in a book. This also provides real world information to all students at their level.
