Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a small Title I neighborhood school tucked between tree lined streets, just blocks from the freeway and busy city intersections. 85% or more of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. My class includes English Language Learners (ELLs), Gifted and Talented students, and Special Needs students. They come to school with a variety of experiences and benefit from hands-on learning and cooperative groups where they can practice communication and collaboration skills.
"The best way of learning about anything is by doing."
My Project
I am requesting a hornworm nursery kit to study the metamorphosis of the hornworm. The kit includes enough larvae for each student to observe the complete metamorphosis, collapsible mesh cage, artificial diet, and resource guide. There is much opportunity to observe, and then during the pupae stage, students will be able to hold the insects in their hands! Finally, during the adult stage, hornworms will be placed in the mesh cage and students will be able to observe how they "live."
"The basis of any scientific theory is through observations.
As scientists, students will record and draw their observations in their journals. Recording and writing observations is important. It provides students the opportunity to stop and think about what they see, make predictions and justify reasons. Students show their understanding through journal entries and drawings. Personal sketches show more understanding than a pre-purchased poster. The best learning is through a students' own observation, not a textbook or lecture. Give my students an unforgettable, exciting hands-on experience!
