One of the most popular areas in our classroom is our ‘dramatic play” area where children are able to act out roles of community helpers and members of the family. We have some fake food and some dishes. This area provides our children with opportunities to work on their pre-literacy skills and expand their vocabulary and speech skills. I received a catalogue this evening that has many “dramatic play” math activities! I would love to be able to not only meet state literacy standards but also math standards in one of the most visited areas of our classroom! I teach in a “blended” Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education classroom located in the Near West Side of Chicago. All students in my classroom are three through six and are either living in extreme poverty or have identified disabilities. It is our goal to give these children as many opportunities as possible in order for them to be as successful in elementary school as they can be! With your kind donation I would love to add to our “dramatic play area” a set of mix and match doughnuts, which will allow students to work on their matching skills and memory skills. I would also love to add a set of rainbow colored cones to work on color recognition. A set of sorting shape cupcakes would be baked frequently in our oven. We would love to have a set of cookies with numbers and candies that would help us work on our number recognition! The Gingerbread cookies would be frequently sorted and connected by attributes and for patterning! Of course, we for sure would need a set of “Count & Stack Dishes” to put all the goodies on! With today's obesity epidemic, I want to make sure I provide healthy choices in our house so that we can address healthy food choices as well. A set of “Pretend & Play Healthy Food Snack Foods Set” would be able to help teachers reinforce healthy eating habits. Thank you so much for your consideration! I can assure you that these materials will be used and loved everyday in our classroom!
