Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a TK-2nd special education classroom for individuals with intellectual disabilities who participate in the moderate/severe alternative curriculum. My students are extremely active, and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. My students have a variety of needs including basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to an age-appropriate standards-based curriculum.
My Project
My students are learning self-help skills everyday in and out of the classroom and dedicating a space in our classroom to practice these skills is important. Many of them need frequent modeling from adults to grasp concepts of everyday life and a few are learning to request help when needed. This is why creating a restaurant within our classroom is a great opportunity for my students to practice these interactions daily.
We will create personalized menus with pictures of selected foods we have in our pretend play area for them to see the many selections they have to choose from.
These menus will be color printed and laminated for durability. Students will take restaurant roles such as, managers, chefs, hostess, customers, and cashiers to learn the various tasks each position holds.
I know that by providing practice in our classroom with these skills, my students can later apply their learnings in their daily lives.
