My Students
My students have a very limited knowledge/understanding of the world around them. We live in a very poor, rural, farming community. It has always been my goal, as a teacher, to introduce my students to the world around them. I am able to achieve this goal through novels and other types of literature.
My students come to me with very limited views on education and the world around them.
This is mostly due to the fact that we live in a very poor area. As a middle school, we are very dedicated in preparing our students for the future. We want them to experience different cultures, ideas, everything that is necessary to help them develop into a well rounded citizen with a love for learning. How to accomplish this? Through the written word.
My personal goal for my students is to read about the past, the present, and the future. I cannot express how wonderful it is to watch my students while reading a novel that centers around history, math, art, and music. That moment of enjoyment and understanding on a child's face is what teaching is all about! My students need to be exposed to other cultures, customs, foods, clothing, religions, etc... The best available resource for that knowledge is books.
My Project
As my students read the novel Among the Hidden, we will be discussing the population laws that different countries have worldwide and how they compare to the United States. Through the novel, other texts (poetry, informational articles), videos, and the Internet, students will understand the concept of population control and understand the meaning of free will. Students will need background knowledge about the role that farming communities play in society within the United States and other countries, the different types of farms that exist in the United States and how the food we eat gets onto our plate. Students will also need background knowledge on the effects of overpopulation such as China-one child law. Students will write an opinion essay for the prompt: If you could only choose one, would you choose for the government to change the population law or bring everyone out of poverty? Support your opinion with specific evidence from the texts and/or videos.
First of all, my students will get to read another great novel!
Students will understand the different types of governments worldwide. My students will gain tremendous knowledge comparing how our country and other countries' laws are alike and different. Students will understand different types of governments worldwide. Most importantly, my students will learn the meaning of free will. If students are exposed to other people, cultures, customs and ideas, they can make informed decisions in life.
