Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I'm a NYC Board of Educuation Teacher. I've been working for the board since 2002. The school I work at is in Brownsville, New York. I teach Pre-K/K. in P.S. 323. It is so hard for our school to get supplies because we are a title one school and we are in a low income area. About 95% of our student get free lunch. I would like the supplies so that my children can be creative and have the supplies even when their parents cannot afford them. It would help our students tremndously. Because we are not a testing grade majority of our funds go to testing materials. I think it would be great for the September children to have all the resources they need right in the classroom. This will help me because I can have them do more projects. I spend about $1000 each year out of pocket money to make sure my children have the best education possible. I have 18 students in my classroom. I would like to boost their reading skills through the use of theme packets. Each theme packet includes a story, plus materials and props to encourage discussion, and a guide for activities related to the themes of the book. The students can work with the theme packets individually in class while I doing work with another student, or take them home, and work with them with their families. Students who can engage their parents in their schoolwork have a better chance of suceeding academically. I want my students to have plenty of opportunities to learn and to be creative, and I don't want parents worried that they can't buy supplies for their children. Thank you for your help!
