My students need help with the writing domain. Writing is their least favorite subject and it is the most difficult. By having their own high-frequency dictionary, they will not get hung up on spelling!

My Students
My students speak English as a second language. They come to school with very different backgrounds and experiences when compared to native English speaking children. Often my students are the only English speakers at home. Their parents are unable to help them with their school work. Many students are dual-served under ESOL and special education.
The students come to school every day with a smile on their face and a determination to succeed,despite the obstacle of learning a new language.
My Project
Having a high frequency word dictionary will help my student tremendously. It will allow them to focus on the writing process rather than how to spell words. The "More Words I Use When I Write" books will give them the independence they need during Writer's Workshop.
Teaching my student to read magazines and news articles is an important skill, especially for the English language learner.
It connects them to current events, and the colorful pictures and other text features helps provide them opportunities to make connections through reading and speaking. "Time For Kids" is the perfect news magazine to help teach my student to read for meaning.
Students will respond to the "Time for Kids" articles by writing summaries and opinion papers. They will have the "More Words I Use When I Write" book to aid them in their writing. Combining the two resources will help increase their knowledge of the English language as well as the writing process.
