Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are learning the skills of perseverance and time management in order to see our tasks through to completion. We work hard, but we also enjoy the time we spend in the classroom together. Speaking of which, what time is it, anyway? They're not always exactly sure!
My school is a Title 1 school in a low-income family neighborhood.
My third-grade students are bright and eager about Math, and we have been persevering through the new Common Core Standards this year! However, one area that my students do not have much background knowledge or experience with is Time and Measurement. We need centers to help strengthen these skills.
My Project
I have selected Time and Measurement center activities that will enable my students to practice the standards of telling time to the nearest minute, and calculating elapsed time. These activities can be completed in small groups during Math Center time, and the puzzles are self-checking so the students get immediate feedback for their answers. These centers also include activities that cover other measurement standards we are learning this year. I am also requesting a magnetic calendar center to help students attain a sense of time over longer periods, engage in study skills like "Backwards Planning," and practice the problem-solving strategy of "Working Backwards." All of these activities will offer expanded opportunities for fun, but practical standards-based practice, while solidifying the students' skills in Time and Measurement.
This project will provide my students with the opportunity to learn and practice the necessary real-life skills of telling time and using a calendar, as well as other measurement tools.
The ability to tell time, calculate elapsed time, and use a calendar for strategies like backwards planning will improve my students' time management skills and study habits in ways that will benefit my students throughout their education and into their careers!
