Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a full inclusion kindergarten class in CA. The students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds. There are 25 students in the class, eight of whom have been identified as having autism. Many of my students are English language learners and come with rich language backgrounds in Vietnamese and Spanish. Over 90% of the students are free or reduced-price lunch families, and we are a Title I school. While the group is very diverse, one thing is for sure, they all have a passion for learning.
In a full inclusion classroom, we serve students with and without disabilities, together, in the same classroom in order to provide a rich social-emotional and education environment for all students.
Many of our students require adapted and differentiated materials in order to access the curriculum and daily activities. All students learn compassion and acceptance of differences throughout the school year. The experience is beneficial for everyone! Everyone wins!
My Project
My students are in need of a space to keep the books they are reading, the books they are creating, and the books I make for them. The book bins will allow each child to have their own library to keep the special books they want to hold on to, so they can read them over and over again.
To have a special little place in the classroom where students can make connections with literacy is so important.
Allowing students to pick the books they would like to read and keep in their book bin will help to nurture a love of reading. When students are finished with the books they can simply exchange them for new titles.
The other materials will help students with the creation of their own books. The stapler will allow their books to be stapled together in the middle to create a "true" feel of a book. The crayons will allow for the people in their books to be represented with their own likeness. Lap desks will give students the opportunity to read OR write anywhere in the room they choose. And the books will be options for students to have in their mini library!
