What the Students Asked for in a Perfect Classroom...

Help me give my students ways to relieve anxiety in a comfortable atmosphere. The mental health of students plays a huge role in their development, growth, and success. I want our classroom to have options for fostering calm.

My Project

My goal for this project is to fulfill my students' requests for items they would want in a perfect classroom! My students worked on a project the first week of school where they independently and then as a small group imagined a list of ideas about what would be included in their perfect classroom. When we talked about the activity as a larger group, the collection of ideas and explanations was more than I ever expected. I was touched by their honesty and willingness to share personal experiences through the activity.

My kids deserve the kind of classroom that will allow them to be happy and successful.

They are a fantastic class of twenty unique and introspective kids. They hoped for different types of seating for group work with each other, but it was equally important for them to have easily moveable seats for independent work if they needed space. They loved the idea of different kinds of lighting to help calm themselves if they were feeling anxious. The list went on to mention other ways they felt most comfortable for them to learn new things in the best way possible. They spoke about many experiences that led them to an overall idea of wanting the perfect classroom to be a peaceful place for our learning to happen. I would love to be able to help them see their vision become their reality.
