Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school can be tough. And middle school in the city is even tougher. My students are asked to navigate the muddy waters of adolescence while competing in the high stakes urban high school game. Most of my students come from minority, low income households and haven’t had access to all the advantages of their higher income peers. I want to help level the playing field.
My students inspire me with their creativity and their curiosity.
I want to make sure they have the materials and the experiences that will prepare them to be successful in high school and beyond.
My Project
My urban students rarely think about where their food comes from or the impact their food choices have on their health and the health of the environment. Our study of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan will give students the opportunity to learn about the impact of these choices and create their own arguments about food security and food chains in the United States.
With Pollan as their guide, my students will be able to investigate each of the food chains that sustain us—industrial food, organic or alternative food, and food we forage ourselves—from the source to a final meal.
We will use this non-fiction text to help learn how the choices we make about the food we eat is about more than just what we put in our bodies.
