Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been teaching in the same school in the Bronx for the past 13 years. I work with some amazing students every year. These students are very resilient. A lot of them come of really tough situations outside of school and yet they come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. Most of them come from homes where English is not the first language spoken therefore it can be hard for them to get the academic support they need.
These children face so many struggles in their lives that I am always trying to figure out new ways to support them.
Everyday Its a battle to level the playing field for these children. Their lack of support and supplies may slow them down a bit but it definitely doesn't stop them. They push through any challenge that is thrown their way. I clearly cannot provide everything these children need on my own, therefore, I need the help of others to provide my students with the things they so richly deserve.
My Project
I work in a New York City school in a low income neighborhood. The students in my classroom have a difficult time affording notebooks, folders, and pencils so affording crucial supplies that keep the students healthy and out of the doctor's office isn't really an option. Some of the students in my class can't afford healthcare and taking a day off work to take their kids to the doctor can be an unaffordable option for them. So although I can't pay for their doctor bills I try to do my part by limiting the amount of days they are out sick.
Our school doesn't have the luxury of providing basic essentials such as soap, paper towel, and hand sanitizer for the classrooms.
So it is left up to the families and teachers to provide them. Since it is difficult for the parents of my students to afford such "luxury" items outside of their homes it is left in my lap. To provide these necessities for 26 kids it is very expensive. It is not uncommon to go through a bottle of sanitizer in about 2 weeks. So as you can probably conclude we run out of these basic necessities long before the year is over. I am asking for help with buying soap, cleaning spray, and sanitizer wipes to name a few items. You could be the one that provides these students with the basic necessities they need to stay healthy in school.
