I teach in a rural, public elementary school with 400 students, grades 4K-6. Many students choose to participate in sports, Destination Imagination, music, and band. By grade five, there are less teachers which leads to a larger class size. With this being said, I need to have a wide variety of materials so that all students are able to succeed no matter what project we are doing.
My students are sweet and full of potential, but the poverty level is high with a 52% free and reduced-price lunch population.
Nonetheless, my school tries very hard to afford all students the same opportunities, no matter what social or economic situation may exist in their lives. All students are offered free breakfast, and we have a peer mentoring program run by our high school students that attends to the primary students' socio-emotional needs which offers free supper as well.
Personally, I take time to get to know each child in my classroom as a whole person. My goal throughout the year is to understand their academic strengths and weaknesses as well as their character strengths and weakness. I love being their friend, teacher, and hopefully a role model.
Most students come to school thinking about something that happened the night before, or not having their homework done, or how they didn't get enough sleep.
This time is an hour every morning to help them mentally, physically, and emotionally prepare for the day ahead.
It could include team building activities, STEM activities, or relationship building activities, but most mornings will be time for the students to just settle in get focused.
It's a time to do what the students need to do to be successful. Whether this means taking a rest, stimulating their minds with brain teasers like Rubik cubes, finishing their homework, talking with a friend or staff member, playing a game like Spot it!, reading, drawing, fidgeting with the slinky's, or sharpening their minds by solving the metal puzzles or Ganowo Snake Cube Mini, etc.
