My Students

I teach at a K-12 independent study school that offers an alternative to traditional schools.

My students come from all over San Diego, as they are very engaged in Music, Sports, Dancing, Acting, as well as many other passions.

They are very motivated and come to class prepared to discuss the history and literature that I teach. They work collaboratively in groups, and we have lively discussions every day as they share their ideas with their classmates, and as a whole class.

I love how hard they work, how engaged they are, and the great attitude they bring every day! We've learned how to blog, create public service announcements on YouTube, and they have incorporated spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations that have all been very impressive!

My Project

"The Lord of the Flies" by William Golding is a classic novel that will allow me to engage my students in thoughtful discussions as we ponder the roots of evil which the author believed existed in each and every one of us!

Do Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and even Sam and Eric really embody Golding's definition of evil?

What causes humans to commit terrible acts against one another? Is it really inherently human to be evil? How does Golding metaphorically represent civilization, innocence, the power of science, and much more?

These books will be enjoyed by my students, and create opportunities for lively debate, and active learning about all aspects of human nature and societies!
