Many of my students are unable to afford the things that are required for this class. I have many ideas that would help my students become better readers and writers. I am just running into the problem that they do not have the materials and I do not have the money to purchase materials for them. I would love for them to have vocabulary/word journals where they would write all of the new words that they learn on a daily basis. They would also write the definitions and use these words in various sentences. This would go along with other activities. As for writing, I have ideas as to how to make persuasive writing a bit easier. the kids would need plenty of Post it notes to accomplish this task before the ISAT. I also want to be able to create various student created books throughout the school year but, again, we are lacking the materials needed for that. I am currently the Language arts/Reading teacher for the 7th and 8th grades. The school is located in the heart of the West side. Many of the kids deal with a lot at home and this is where they are able to be free and safe. I believe that reading and writing are excellent ways in which to calm someone. They are able to go to a new place each time they read and they are able to write out all of their frustrations through writing. We simply need 25-30 composition notebooks, which would be used as reading/vocabulary journals for the students. I believe that if they broaden their vocabulary, not only would they feel better as a person but people would view them differently when they speak. We need many, many post it notes to prepare them for persuasive writing. We would also need lined book paper and ribbon for the books that they create. Colored pencils and markers would also be great so that they will be able to decorate their books. Having their own books in the class would definitely give them a feeling of ownership. I want my students to feel like they have a chance and I believe that starting here is a good start.
