My Students
Do you remember the days when the waning school days were upon you? Spring fever has hit. The school days are winding down. The temperatures are rising..... Well, unfortunately, sometimes (shockingly) it can be hard to keep 6th graders attention this time of year.
These are 6th graders in an advanced work class program in Boston Public Schools.
Students in the advanced work program take classes at an accelerated pace and study materials more in-depth.
Most of these students have been in the advanced work program for upwards of 2 to 3 years. These students are preparing for similarly rigorous programs at various college preparatory schools.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of the book "The Planet of Junior Brown" by Virginia Hamilton. I wanted to use this book to close out my English Language Arts year with the students. I think the mysterious and quirky plot and characters will keep students interested and talking to each other into the wee hours of Spring.
I personally feel that this project is important because my students need to be exposed to a range of novels and literature before moving on to 7th grade at various college prep programs.
This is a different novel that will get kids brains and thoughts going. Also, it is always a great treat for students to have a book of their own to take home and read - and re-read.
