What is the meaning of a literal great heart? That is the question my fourth graders have been trying to answer throughout our first reading module. Students spend several weeks learning about the Circulatory System through the use of videos, literature, and writing opportunities.
Can you think of a better way to understand how the heart works than seeing an actual real life heart!
Fourth grade students will collaborate with High School Animal Science students for a once in a lifetime opportunity! Together we will dissect a pig heart. With the help of our high school students, my fourth graders will be able to see what they've read about come to life right in front of their eyes!
By funding this project you will help contribute to the purchase of pig hearts needed for the dissection. This project could get messy and safety is always a priority when conducting scientific investigations. For that reason, I'm also in need of disposable aprons and safety goggles that are just their size.
This hands-on experiment will allow students to see what a literal healthy heart looks like. The real life connection will allow them to identify the parts and functions of the heart. My hope is that this experience will continue to foster their excitement and love of learning, possibly even inspire them to pursue a future in the STEM field.
