This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 26 blossoming students are chomping at the bit for access to inspiring literature that stimulates their imaginations and engages their interest in conversing and interacting with one another. They have been learning to build on each others' ideas and opinions and to make connections to experiences.
I have 26 incredible English Language Learners in a Structured English Immersion classroom.
They are astute and eager to learn. Their are not aware of their limitations, all the while, their families struggle to make ends meet. Our school population qualifies for school-wide free lunch.
Our school is located in a mixed lower socio-economic neighborhood, with many apartment buildings amongst single family homes. Some gang activity is evident, but the children still come to school with positive attitudes towards learning and having success in the classroom.
Collectively, my young learners are a chatty bunch, with a ton to say. It is their conversational skills (listening and asking questions on topic) that need continual nurturing. My kindergarteners have made enormous academic gains and would greatly benefit from receiving these additional books that appeal to their interests and engage their desire to construct meaningful conversations about their thoughts and interpretations.
My Project
We have been working on constructing academic conversations that are conducted by two speakers that do not include me, the teacher. The resources I am requesting in this project will be used to peak student interest and curiosity about language and life experiences. These books will be the catalysts needed to launch the students into the conversations they need to be having with one another in order to build their language capacities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). The children will strengthen their understanding of turn-taking, stating their comments and in turn, asking their conversational partner what they notice, or think, and why. The literature books selected will influence these conversations between students and will provide the opportunities for talking and asking questions to build on the skill known as create, clarify, and fortify. The listed titles will be used so the students will build and fortify their ideas about the events and characters explored in them.
As the CCSS seek to evaluate students' reading comprehension through their writing, my students will use these essential materials to build the integrated language arts.
Funding of this project will allow the material necessary to provide my students with an enormous gift to improve their gab. In this time of educational shifts and Common Core State Standards, students must hone their listening and speaking skills that may, in turn, positively affect their reading and writing capacities.
