What is Student Engagement with Technology?

My Project

Getting students excited about middle school English can be very difficult. Luckily, I have been having success lately with two classic strategies. The strategies are interactive Do Nows and interactive study sessions. I am asking for help purchasing technology that will push the engagement to the next level.

Game buzzers and Bluetooth computer mice will answer direct requests from students who have been actively trying to engage with our classroom more effectively.

When students enter the classroom, we have an art prompt or puzzle to complete before we start our work. It helps students get to the correct websites faster and calms them down enough to allow me to deliver instructions when our real task starts. Students are finding that using the trackpad on their Chromebooks is a barrier to them enjoying the art or puzzle.

Classic study and/or review lessons are classically met with groans of anguish. It has been this way since Alexander The Great had to first read The Iliad with Aristotle. But, students love games. Playing Jeopardy and other similar games has been great at building engagement. The biggest issue I run into is students having too much fun. What an issue to have! Seriously, though, it is impossible to know who raised their hand first when 30 7th and 8th graders are losing their minds trying to answer a question. A game buzzer that displays who pressed first would streamline the only downside to studying games we experience.
