Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have a wonderful group of students that are eager to learn and are "sponges" when it comes to learning new information. My students enjoy hands-on learning activities as well as having the opportunity to research and find interesting facts and information. Although the classroom environment has to change, my students and their needs have not.

This year has been very hard on my students because with many of my students, school is the only place that they have the ability to explore new things.

When they leave school, many of my students go home and take care of their brothers and sisters. Now they are doing so, while in school as well. They don't have the opportunity to be kids. In my class, I try to provide them with a learning environment where they not only learn, but have the opportunity to investigate, explore, and have fun while learning.

I will be teaching an Environmental Science elective class. In this class we will be exploring renewable energy. We will use the solar oven, solar cars, and solar balloon to learn different ways solar energy can be utilized. In addition, we will identify and learn about addition methods of renewable energy by building the windmill kit and water wheel kit.

I have noticed that many of my students have had very limited experiences learning science in the lower grades. I would like to change that by offering an environmental science elective. Within this elective we will be exploring renewable energy in a hands-on fashion.
