This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach five Biology classes for ninth graders. Every year, I get brand new students fresh from middle school who haven't spent much time exploring science or doing experiments. It is a wonderful opportunity for me to help them explore a new subject that allows for hands-on activities such as experiments.
This Bacterial Collection lab is one of the most popular experiments.
It allows them to grow bacteria they collect from everyday items or places, such as their cell phones, mouths, and hands. Over a week, they can see the microorganisms grow in the Petri dishes. We also use this lab to see the effectiveness of antibacterial liquids by monitoring their effect on bacterial growth.
Due to price, these experiments are cost-prohibitive unless we place students in large groups. This is not conducive for each student to have an active role in the activity. But, if they are in groups of two, it guarantees that each student will be directly involved in their learning. With your help, I am hoping that this year I can teach this lesson with enough kits to make smaller groups possible.
