This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inner city students, the school has an 80% poverty rate. The students that will directly benefit from this project are enrolled in my ninth grade biology course.

Many of my students never leave the city limits of our district.

I teach my course by introducing students to global issues. It is my goal to develop students into global citizens and show them how they can apply the skills and concepts they are learning to make the world a better place.

My Project

Many of my students become interested in science during their high school years. Together we explore the curriculum together, investigating global issues and we focus on the causes, brainstorm ideas how to help solve these issues and even learn the current actions being taken to fix these issues. The perspective we are missing is of those on the front lines of these issues, the individuals conducting the investigations.

The Scientist in the Field book series will introduce students to the HOW!

How do we know there is an issue? How are experiments conducted in the field? How can one scientific team make an impact?

I find that a lot of my students that truly enjoy science go into the nursing field, one reason being they do not know the many options they have beyond this field. In these books the authors share their scientific field experiences, which I hope to inspire my students to enter STEM fields.
