What is Happening in our Neck of the Woods?

My students need soil and water test kits to conduct hands on investigations in a stream next to our school to analyze the affects of human impact on our environment.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to go fishing and swimming in a local stream when you were young? Our community is centered around a stream that flows through our town. Many of my students want to analyze the affects that our community is having on the quality of the water in the stream.

I have approximately 46, 6th graders who are energetic and eager to learn about their environment.

They love science because of its hands-on aspect. They attend a rural public school in Arkansas with an enrollment of approximately 580 students, (K-12). Over 20% of my students are resource students, one with a full-time aid. The hands-on activities provide meaningful opportunities for them to learn and discover their potential. Many of my students also come from lower income families and our school's free and reduced lunch percentage is around 70%. I just have a regular classroom and I have to be creative in order to provide quality hands-on learning opportunities for my students. They want to do more than simple demonstrations. They want to discover new things and try to find solutions for their community.

My Project

The environmental test materials I want to purchase for my students will give them the opportunity to conduct real meaningful experiments on their local environment. They will be able to analyze the quality of the soil and water in and around the stream. The students will be able to collect water and soil samples in order to conduct experiments to analyze the quality of the water and soil, and also determine if the local community is having an adverse affect on the local ecosystem. While conducting the experiments on the soil and water samples, the students will be able to learn and practice safe lab testing procedures. They will build their self esteem as they make discoveries and share their information with their fellow classmates and their parents. Hopefully from their results, they will learn what they can do do make their local environment cleaner and better for themselves and future generations.

By funding this project, you will be able to give my students the opportunity to get out of the textbook and into the world of hands-on exploration.

They will be able to conduct true inquiry based investigations. They will be able to design and conduct meaningful experiments to learn something new about the environment where they live and what they can do to make it a better place for all.
