My Students

I work in the media center of a middle school. There are many activities going on in the media center during the day and after school. I want to encourage my students to read by exposing them to as many books as possible.

Our school library is an essential resource for my students'.

We have approximately 610 students from sixth to eighth grade. The majority of our school qualifies for a free or reduced-price lunch. Having books for the students to read to enjoy and to learn is important for their development.

My Project

Currently, our media center has few nonfiction books for our students to utilize. We are in need of books that assist with teaching students how to conduct research and biographies of historical and current individuals. I want to purchase nonfiction books and have them available for all students in my school.

Do we have any books about this person?

This is something I hear weekly from students when they visit the media center. Many times I have to tell them no and see the disappointment on their faces. Our students are not familiar with important individuals, past and present, in our world. Nonfiction books give them the exposure they need.

By providing these books to our students, my desire is to assist students with classroom projects and to increase their knowledge about influential individuals. Some of these individuals have overcome great obstacles in their lives which I believe will encourage our students to push themselves to accomplish their goals.
